The E111 form, which entitled UK residents to free or reduced cost health care in most European countries, became invalid on 1 January 2006. People planning to travel can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which replaced the E111 from 1 January 2006. In order to avoid paying unnecessary medical bills when travelling in Europe it is necessary to carry an EHIC as well as having comprehensive travel insurance to cover medical bills.
