The ABI has announced all product providers must adopt a new definition for when and in what circumstances life and critical illness cover pays out by April 2007. It also added three new standard illness definitions for Alzheimer's, HIV and traumatic head injury to its existing list of 20 defined illnesses.

Revisions to the ABI's Statement of Best Practice for Critical Illness cover includes a new cancer definition to ensure that critical illness cover remains affordable in the light of the Government’s Prostate Cancer Management Programme, and a new heart attack definition to reflect the increasing use of troponin tests in the diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks.

The Association of British Insurers is recommending a broader definition of a heart attack for critical illness insurance in order to take account of the growing use of Troponin tests by the medical profession. The proposed definition means that for critical illness insurance purposes the diagnosis of a heart attack will need to be supported by other evidence such as a positive ECG test or a heart scan.

A Government-backed project, designed to detect prostate cancer at its earliest and most manageable stages, has resulted in the ABI proposing a change to the model cancer definition for critical illness policies, to ensure that critical illness cover remains affordable.
