Only Half Of First-Time Buyers Escape Stamp Duty According To Council Of Mortgage Lenders' New Regulated Mortgage Survey

Government attempts to ease the burden of stamp duty on first-time house buyers have failed, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders. CML figures show that half of all first-time buyers and more than three-quarters of home movers now pay stamp duty, despite the decision to raise the threshold for it from £60,000 to £125,000 in the last two Budgets. A generation ago the twin concerns of a 20-something year old may have been getting married and having babies. These days paying off student debt and getting a first foot on the first rung of the property ladder are of more concern. Any advice a financial adviser can offer to a client or their children in planning for the future is likely to be welcomed. These latest vital statistics from the CML are a stark reminder of the financial problems facing young adults and are a source of useful information for financial advisers.

Problems On Forms And Interest

HM Revenue & Customs has reluctantly agreed to change the system it uses to scan stamp duty forms to try to halve the error rate. By oversight, the necessary Treasury regulations providing for the setting of the rates of interest chargeable and payable were overlooked. SI 2005 / 2462 provides for the setting of the rates of interest.
