I appreciate that this could apply to many things such as economic policies, fashion sense or even kettles for all I know. However, my brain was heading towards those trying to find some effective leadership. Maybe the changes of last weekend might just be the catalyst for change that we have been waiting for to finally get things moving in Euroland and to try and break this seemingly intractable euro impasse.

In the midst of one of the more unusual droughts, it may seem odd to be giving a storm warning, but over the next few months our stock markets are far more likely to be driven by the vacuous actions of our somewhat unreliable politicians, than either any clear economic direction or corporate results.

The Year of the Water Dragon, whilst normally providing good joss for those followers of Chinese astrology, is also proving to be a challenging one on various fronts. Not only is there the change of leadership to be managed, much of which of course will be carried below the surface of the water (useful for a water dragon), but also there is a fundamental change in the economic environment.

Well we shouldn't complain. The USA has had three months of consecutive growth in employment, and the number registered for unemployment benefits has fallen. We can add to this that most of the corporate results have generally been pretty positive with many building larger cash piles and profits looking quite healthy. Furthermore, the stock markets have been more buoyant, with the S&P 500 back above its post financial crisis high and the Dow hovering around 13000, so obviously some form of financial Spring is here?
